Scenes With Girls
Scenes with Girls is a sharp, witty play by Miriam Battye that provides a snapshot of the fiercely intense and sometimes toxic co-dependent friendship between two 24-year-old flatmates, Tosh and Lou. The pair have aggressively rejected "the Narrative"—the traditional societal path of pursuing marriage and children—and attempt to construct their own identities outside of male validation. While Lou adopts a purely sexual, non-committal dating life, Tosh commits to a more intellectual and political celibacy. Their bond is the central force, but its self-imposed isolation is challenged by the cheerful, conventional presence of their former flatmate, Fran, who arrives with the announcement of her impending marriage. Fran's decision to embrace the traditional life path forces Tosh and Lou to confront whether their own radical lifestyle choices are truly empowering or merely an avoidance mechanism, ultimately raising questions about the controlling nature inherent in all forms of intense attachment, even within female friendship.
